The Bergamot Show Review

In the midst of a 50-state tour promoting their latest album, “Tones,” the wonderful Brooklyn-based husband and wife duo Nathaniel Paul Hoff and Jillian Speece, known as The Bergamot, played an exquisite and impeccably crafted set of alternative folk and pop rock music at a recent show at Hotel Cafe.  When Nathaniel and Jillian harmonized together, it clear the audience were in the midst of something special and most memorable. The harmonies were just beautiful – shimmering and lush. Nathaniel plays guitar and keys and Jillian uses shakers to augment the sparse sound. The simplicity of instrumentation left enough room for the lovely melodies to float in anchoring the songs. “Tones” is a strong collection of personal and universally-themed penned material that resonated strongly among the crowd striking a familiar chord. “Broken Corners,” “Alive,” “Periscope,” “Remedy,” “L.A.,” and “Young Again” were among the night’s highlights. Nathaniel and Jillian told interesting, lively and unpredictable stories on the road so far between numbers that kept the audience amused and entertained. They also have a unforced natural rapport. Nathaniel and Jillian are very likable and have an easy charisma that draw you in. Based on the strength and power of their latest album, “Tones,” and exceptional show at Hotel Cafe, The Bergamot showed they are a gifted musical duo with staying power.
